September is National Library Card Sign-up Month

This September the Morgantown Public Library System is joining the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-Up Month. A library card opens a world of infinite possibilities through resources and services – like our 24/7 digital library – that give students the tools to succeed in school and beyond. “Over the past five years new card registrations have doubled,” says Sarah Palfrey, Director of the Morgantown Public Library System. “Library cards are more valuable than ever, not only do they provide access to more than 200,000 items on our shelves, but an additional 115,000 digital materials.”

Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Our Universe of Stories summer reading program saw 475 children participate in reading challenges at all of our branches. Studies show that children who are read to, in the home, and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

Disney’s and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” characters Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Bo Peep and friends are going on an adventure as Honorary Chairs of Library Card Sign-Up Month. Come to the Morgantown Public Library on September 28 from 11am – 2pm  for Toy Story Saturday! Celebrate all of your favorite friends from Toy Story by visiting a wide variety of activity stations which will include games, crafts, food, fun, music and more.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. At the age of four (4) a child, with their legal guardian, can receive their very own card!
