Teen/Tween Summer Reading Program 2022

Sign up for the 2022 Teen/Tween Summer Reading Program (June – July) with take-home kits, movie nights, anime club gatherings, graphic novel club meetings, and a yoga session!

This program is part of our Summer Reading Program with events and challenges designed for all age groups including children (grades 1-5) and adults.

Win Prizes

All participants that log at least 3 books on Beanstack will receive this year’s Summer Reading Program system-wide prize: a waterproof dry bag (see image below)Visit any branch location to pick up your dry bag by September 30th.

For every 3 books logged, you will be entered into a drawing for additional prizes, including but not limited to 1 Lucky Charms blanket, 1 mermaid blanket, and 3 flip-mood sea creatures plushies!

We have put together an edible science experiment making homemade slurpee. You can pick one grab n’ go kit at any branch location as supplies last.

Location: Aull Center for Local History & Genealogy
Registration: Not required.
Join Nathan at the Aull Center for Local History & Genealogy to learn more about the creatures of the Devonian Sea. Millions of years ago, during the Devonian Era, what is now West Virginia was covered by an inland sea that was home to ancient marine species both terrifying and adorable. Learn more about these creatures with activities like coloring book pages, DIY pins, and homemade fossils!

Join the anime club for this month’s in-person meeting to try a variety of ocean-themed Japanese snacks, read manga, and make origami lucky stars!

Teens (Ages 12-18) are invited join us for this month’s movie night! We will be kicking this series off with the 2018 blockbuster hit Aquaman (PG-13) starring Jason Momoa playing Arthur Curry. Arthur, the human-born heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, goes on a quest to prevent a war between the worlds of ocean and land.

Pizza will be served to all participants!

This month, we have put together a DIY lava lamp that you can pick up at any branch location. These grab n’ go kits will be available as supplies last.

We have compiled some recommended resources for you as it relates to our STEM activity.

Location: Downtown Branch (Meeting Room A | Lower Level)
Registration: Not required.
Bring your yoga mat and dress comfortably for a beginners yoga class for teens (ages 12-18). Listen to the ocean waves, smell sea salt in the air, and practice mindfulness. Participants will receive small mindfulness kits, including: a journal, candle, resources packet, and other goodies! Kits are available on a first come first serve basis.

Registration: A one-time registration on our online form is required for participation.
Before the meeting be sure to pick up an Oceans of Possibilities-themed anime craft at the library branch of your choice. On July 19th join the anime club virtually over Zoom to talk all things anime and manga.

In our Summer Reading Program book club meeting, we’ll be discussing, “A Snake Falls to Earth” by Darcie Little Badger. Pick up a FREE copy to keep from any library branch location as supplies last.

Registration is not required. Just show up! You can pick up your book starting on July 1st.

Calling all tweens (ages 9-12) that are graphic novel lovers or reluctant readers – join our Graphic Novel Club! Members of this new club will receive a graphic novel to keep and an invitation to join a discussion and activity inspired by that month’s graphic novel. This month we are reading “Sea Sirens” by Amy Chu!

This club will meet every other month. You can sign up at any time–however membership must be renewed after July’s meeting for the second half of the year.
