Job Overview:

We are looking for a creative, enthusiastic, and outgoing individual to join the Public Services and programming teams at our main library. This position serves under the general direction of the Assistant Director. The person in the role will be generally responsible for planning and presentation of programming for middle-grade and young adult audiences, development of our young adult collection, and reference services and reader’s advisories to middle-grade and young adult patrons. This position will work in conjunction with our Children’s Librarian and other programming staff to oversee and develop our youth programming schedule.

This person will be expected to work a 36-hour work week including evening shifts and one scheduled Saturday a month. This position’s schedule will resemble the following: Monday – Thursday 12:30 pm – 8:00 pm, Friday 8:30 am – 4:00 pm, and 8:30 am – 4:00 pm one Saturday per month. Scheduling may change due to the changing needs of the library or system branches. This person must be able to lift and carry books with the aid of book carts as well as the ability to shelve materials that may involve pushing carts, bending, stooping, and reaching.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Plans and presents a minimum of four to six library programs per month
  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory to Middle Grade and Young Adult patrons
  • Contributes to the management of the young adult collection (print, digital and audio materials) as part of the Collection Development Team
  • Promotes interest in the library as a community resource by visiting and speaking to schools and youth organizations
  • Supports the Evening Shift Supervisor in overseeing general operations of the library for the evening shift
  • Serves as the person in charge in the absence of the Evening Shift Supervisor for the evening shift
  • Mentors and provides guidance to staff in planning and presenting Youth Programming
  • Plans and participates in special programs and events both at the library and off-site for teen audiences
  • Responsible for identifying and interpreting user needs
  • Coordinates and oversees volunteer program at the Morgantown Public Library.
  • Service desk support – providing Reference and/or Circulation assistance by working the desk as scheduled by Assistant Director
  • Set up and break down meeting rooms for programs
  • Room/equipment set up and troubleshooting for library events and community use of library spaces.
  • Attends conferences, workshops, and meetings and reads professional literature to stay informed on issues related to public libraries and Youth services
  • Performs duties in other library areas or branches and participates in library special projects as needed or requested by the Director

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • A valid driver’s license, the ability to obtain one, or another reliable form of transportation

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Willingness to try new things, think outside the box and have fun
  • General knowledge or interest in young adult literature and pop culture
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to relate positively to community groups, library patrons, and staff
  • Specialized knowledge of computers, including MS Office Professional, Sierra, and general search techniques
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to train and supervise volunteers

Pay Range:

This position starts between $15 and $17 per hour depending on qualifications and experience plus a generous benefits package.
