 Job Overview

We are looking for a compassionate and experienced manager to lead our main library. This role serves under the direction of the library director and supervises all public service staff as well as the children’s librarian and teen specialist. The person in this role will oversee the daily operations, activities, and staff by creating a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment for staff and patrons. Areas of responsibility include:

  • circulation,
  • collection development,
  • readers’ advisory and reference services,
  • events programming,
  • outreach,
  • resource sharing,
  • management and development of staff,
  • and facilities oversight.

This person will be expected to work a 36-hour work week including one scheduled Saturday a month. Some evening shifts may be required. This person must be able to lift and carry books with the aid of book carts as well as the ability to shelve materials that may involve pushing carts, bending, stooping, and reaching.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides mentorship, leadership, and management to staff
  • Creates a learning and supportive environment for staff and patrons
  • Oversees the management of the physical collections as part of the Collection Development Team
  • Promotes interest in the library as a community resource by visiting and speaking to civic, cultural and social organizations
  • Oversees special programs and events both at the library and off-site
  • Supervises service desks and creates schedules
  • Promotes and supports the overall mission of the Morgantown Public Library System by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with staff and patrons; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace
  • Sets goals and objectives that support the library’s mission
  • Identifies and interprets user needs
  • Provides training to MPL staff, branches, and affiliate libraries
  • Attends conferences, workshops, and meetings and reads professional literature to stay informed on issues related to public libraries
  • Completes 3 hours of approved continuing education requirements a year
  • Performs duties in other library areas or branches and participates in library special projects as needed or requested by the Director

Required Qualifications:

  • A Masters of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from an ALA accredited school
  • A valid driver’s license, the ability to obtain one, or another reliable form of transportation

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years in a supervisory role
  • Knowledge of professional library methods
  • Ability to adapt and comfortable managing change
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to think strategically and solve problems
  • Ability to relate positively to community groups, library patrons and staff
  • Specialized knowledge of computers, including MS Office Professional, Sierra and general search techniques
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to train, evaluate, and inspire staff

Pay Range:

Hiring between $48,000-54,000, plus a generous benefit package.

Job Overview

We are looking for a demonstrated leader who will serve as part of the administrative leadership team working to develop, administer, and coordinate budgets and goals for outreach, programming, and library experiences in support of the library mission and strategic plan. Additionally, the person in this role is responsible for organizing system-wide programs for all ages (such as the Summer Reading Program) at a variety of locations as well as duties related to collection promotion and special events and activities.

Long periods of sitting or standing in a variety of indoor and outdoors settings may be required. This person must have the ability to travel to alternate locations by having a valid driver’s license.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Design, facilitate and implement a variety of library events and experiences for all ages, both in-person and virtually.
  • Review program and outreach proposals from staff and community requests to align them with the library’s mission and vision.
  • Develop supplemental program materials, including reading lists, promotional displays, and presentation materials to support the library’s strategic plan.
  • Recommend policies, procedures, and strategic initiatives related to programs and services for patrons of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Identify budgetary needs of the department, prepare budget requests, effectively communicate budget needs to the library Director.
  • Facilitate communication between Marketing Manager and responsible staff to promote programs and events.
  • Assist Marketing Manager with content creation and system management for social media, website, and print.
  • Identify and apply for grants to establish new and innovative programs and experiences.
  • Identify and create programs, services, and partnerships for vulnerable and underserved populations.
  • Serve as a liaison to schools, daycares, and senior centers in Monongalia County.
  • Represent the library at outreach events and actively seek opportunities to expand awareness of library offerings and services.
  • Work scheduled desk shifts at a variety of library locations as needed.
  • Support branches in the development of unique programs and experiences.
  • Monitor programs and services for quality and efficiency; assess community needs for additional outreach programs and services.
  • Evaluate programs and services across MPLS.
  • Keep required statistics and reports.

The person in this role must be able to lift and carry books (up to 40 lbs), push carts and maintain library order or assist a patron by bending, reaching, or climbing ladders.

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or 2 years of program development including
  • Teamwork.
  • A valid driver’s license, the ability to obtain one, or another reliable form of transportation.
  • Technology (computers, wifi, devices such as phones, tablets and e-readers).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Collaborate as part of a team, inspire others, and build community relations.
  • Work independently and set priorities with sound judgment.
  • Think creatively and solve problems while in the field.
  • Meet deadlines.

 Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • A Masters of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from an ALA accredited school
  • Principles and practices of public library service
  • Evaluation methods

Pay Range:

Hiring between $28,080-32,000, plus a generous benefits package
